ATS-Friendly CV Format: What Recruiters Actually Want
Most CVs get filtered out before a human ever reads them. Here is the ATS-friendly CV format that gets through every applicant tracking system in 2026.
If you have ever applied to 50 jobs and heard back from none, the culprit is probably not your experience. It is your CV's format. Almost every medium and large employer runs incoming CVs through an applicant tracking system (ATS) โ software that parses, scores, and ranks each document before a recruiter sees it. A pretty CV that the ATS cannot read is worse than a plain one it can. Here is the format that actually gets through.
What an ATS actually does
An ATS reads your CV top-to-bottom, left-to-right, and tries to extract structured data: name, contact, work history, skills, education. It then compares those fields against the job posting and assigns a match score. Anything the parser cannot interpret โ a graphic, a two-column layout, a date in an image โ is silently dropped. You never know it happened.
The ATS-safe format, in one page of rules
Single column. Always.
Two-column resumes look modern in a browser and look like garbled text to most parsers. Use one full-width column with clear section headings.
Standard section names
Use the boring words: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications. The ATS is trained on these. 'Professional Journey' and 'My Toolkit' break parsing.
Text, not graphics
No icons for phone or email. No photo (in most markets โ Gulf practice varies, see below). No skill bars or rating stars. The text has to be selectable.
Common fonts at 10โ11pt body
Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Georgia. Anything more exotic gets substituted by the parser and changes your spacing.
Dates in a consistent format
Pick MM/YYYY or Month YYYY and use it everywhere. Mixing 'Jan 2022' and '03/2024' confuses the parser and creates gaps in your inferred timeline.
Save as .docx or text-layer PDF
A PDF exported from Word or a real CV builder works. A PDF that is actually a scanned image is invisible to ATS. If you can highlight and copy the text in the file, the ATS can read it.
Keywords are the other half of the score
Format gets you parsed. Keywords get you ranked. Read the job ad, list every hard skill and tool mentioned, and weave them into your bullets where they are true. Repeat the most important ones two or three times across the document. Do not hide white-on-white keyword stuffing โ modern ATS flags it and good recruiters spot it instantly.
Gulf market notes
- Photos: still common in KSA, UAE, and Egypt. If your local recruiter expects one, place a clean head-and-shoulders photo on a single line at the top โ never embedded in a complex header block.
- Languages: list each language with proficiency (Native, Fluent, Working). Arabic + English at fluent level is a strong default.
- Nationality and availability: many regional employers expect both. One line each, in a clearly-labelled Personal Information section at the bottom.
The one-click test
Open your CV in any PDF reader and press Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C. Paste into a plain text editor. If your name, contact details, and work history come through in the right order with no scrambled blocks, you are ATS-safe. If they do not, the format is broken.
